What is Reiki?

Reiki translates to ‘life force energy’ and is a Japanese healing technique based on the belief that the reiki practitioner can channel energy to the client through the hands. This is done by means of hovering the hands above the body or by gentle touch. The hands are placed in specific positions related to the seven energy centers, or chakras, of the body. With much practice and fine-tuning, a practitioner can feel subtle energetic reactions from the body. Each energetic center represents an aspect of development within an individual’s psyche.

We can relate the energy centers to the western psychology of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, in which the lowest part of the triangle represents the basic survival needs that must be met so that a solid foundation can be built. If all levels are developed in a healthy manner then self-actualization can take place. In eastern philosophy, self-actualization can be viewed as enlightenment. A healthy flow of energy throughout the body has been crucial as the center of most eastern belief systems. There are many ways of balancing out our energy. We can approach it from the physical that will in turn change our emotional and psychological states. We may also address the emotional and psychological aspects and in turn our physical bodies will change.

Reiki is believed to improve just about every aspect of life, from physical health to emotional well-being. It helps aid in reducing stress and providing mental clarity. It has recently begun being used as a complement to treatment in many hospitals in North America. It is used to enhance the health care the patient receives and reduces anxiety and stress often associated with serious illness, disease or surgery. Reiki has also been known to help those with minor psychological problems. Some benefits of regular reiki treatments are:

  • Stress reduction
  • Relaxation

  • Greater body awareness
  • Aid in the grieving process

  • Reduction of side-effects from treatments. For example, cancer patients who received Reiki as well as chemotherapy noticed a marked decrease in side-effects.

The type of Reiki that many people practice today is known as Usui Reiki and has been in use for over one hundred years. However, the concept of energy and energy healing has been around for thousands of years in different forms such as Tai Chi, Qigong, Pranic Healing, Chinese Meridians etc. Usui Reiki was originally founded by Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan.  Dr. Usui had an interest in medicine, psychology and theology. The combination of these interest caused him to seek a way to heal himself and others using the cultivation of universal energy. He was driven to create a method of healing that was not specific to any religion or religious belief system. Allowing all people could benefit from the treatment.

During a 21 day fast on Mount Kurama. Dr. Usui meditated. On the morning of the twenty-first day, it is said that Sanskrit symbols appeared before him. With this knowledge, he developed the system of healing known as Usui Reiki and became known for his healing method and the practice of Usui Reiki spread throughout the world.
